Paul B. Laursen (born 1973) is a Canadian exercise physiologist and endurance-sports coach. He has published research on high-intensity interval training (HIIT), heart rate variability, and thermoregulation in athletes.[1]
Education and career
Laursen earned a Bachelor of Human Kinetics and a Master of Science in exercise physiology from the University of British Columbia. He completed his PhD at the University of Queensland in 2003.[2]
After postdoctoral work in Australia, he joined High Performance Sport New Zealand and served as physiology manager. He later became an adjunct professor at Auckland University of Technology and at the University of Agder in Norway.[3]
Research
Laursen's 2003 paper with David Jenkins, "The scientific basis for high-intensity interval training," has been cited over 4,000 times.[1] His work on heart rate variability in endurance athletes has also been referenced in sports science publications.[4]
Media coverage
In 2017, Laursen's work on HIIT was cited by Radio New Zealand in a report discussing the potential risks of high-intensity exercise volume.[5] In 2023, Fast Talk Labs released a podcast episode highlighting Laursen's contributions to interval training research.[6] Triathlete Magazine profiled his work in a 2025 article on heart rate variability training.[7]
Publications
In 2018, Laursen co-authored *The Science and Application of High-Intensity Interval Training* with Martin Buchheit. The book was covered in *Cricket World* and described as a reference for sports coaches.[8]
