Hon. Dr. Patrick Cheruiyot Mutai, born 8 March 1982, is a Kenyan politician and former accountant who is serving as the 3rd Speaker[1] of the County Assembly of Kericho since September 2022.[2]

He had a long stint as the County Executive Committee Member of Finance and Economic Planning in the County Government of Kericho [3]between 2013 and 2022 and briefly served as the County Executive Committee Member of Public Works, Roads and Transport in the same period. [4]

Patrick unsuccessfully contested for the UDA (United Democratic Alliance (Kenya) ticket for Kipkelion East parliamentary seat in 2022 where he emerged third.

He is married to Mrs. Edith Mutai and together have two children, Ann and Jesse.

Early life and education

Patrick was born in Barotion in the then Kericho District. He attended Londiani Academy for his primary school education and joined Kirobon Secondary School in 1997 where he sat for his KCSE in the year 2000.

He is a Ph.D. holder in Business Administration (Finance) from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT)[5] which he acquired in July 2015 and also has a Master of Business Administration (Finance) degree attained in July 2011 in the same institution. His first degree was a Bachelor of Commerce-Finance and before that had studied for a Diploma in Business Management graduating in May 2004.

Career

Patrick joined Bhachu Industries Limited, a trailer manufacturing company based in Nairobi, in 2008 as an Assistant Accountant rising to the position of Head of Final Accounts in 2010. He served in the position for two years when he left to join the County Government of Kericho as the County Executive Committee Member of Finance and Economic Planning, a post he held until 2022. He also served briefly as the County Executive Committee Member of Public, Works and Transport.

Politics

Dr. Patrick Mutai unsuccessfully vied for Kipkelion East parliamentary seat losing narrowly to Hon Joseph Cherorot in the UDA primaries held in April 2022. He then contested for the Speaker of the County Assembly of Kericho in September of the same year winning handily. He remains guarded over his future political plans.

Under his watch, the Assembly has become assertive over its independence occasioning a run-in with the Executive wing of the devolved unit and the National Government.[6][7][8][9]
