A person who answers requests for medical assistance outside of a hospital is known as a paramedic. This person is a trained medical practitioner. The majority of paramedics are employed in some capacity within the emergency medical services (EMS), the majority of the time inside ambulances. The duties and responsibilities of a paramedic might vary from country to country, although they often entail making independent decisions on the emergency treatment of patients.

While the word "paramedic" is occasionally used in an informal sense to refer to any member of the ambulance crew, it should be noted that not all ambulance staff members are paramedics. In some countries where English is the official language, there is an official distinction between emergency medical technicians (or emergency care assistants) and paramedics, with paramedics having additional educational requirements as well as a broader scope of practise than emergency medical technicians.
