The building occupied by the bar was built in 1907 to serve as a general store in the San Geronimo Valley, in West Marin. It became a soda fountain during Prohibition, and a tavern in the late 1930s. In the 1960s it was a bar called The Lodge, known as a biker bar[1], and a popular hangout for Janis Joplin and her band, Big Brother and the Holding Company. In 1967, Thomasina Wilson purchased the building, and renamed it the Papermill Creek Saloon the following year[2]. Under her ownership, the bar became a social gathering place for the neighborhood.[3]
In recent years, the bar has become a popular music venue for the bay area music scene, specializing in Americana (music). Occasional performers include Elvin Bishop and Josh Zee. The turn toward live music came about under the current owner, Rebecca Wilson, Thomasina Wilson's daughter.[4]
Each year during the holiday season, Bay Area bikers celebrate the completion of their annual toy drive at the bar.[5]
