Paco Eduardo Bravo is a Colombian physician specialized in nuclear medicine and cardiology. He is an Assistant Professor of Radiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and serves as its Director of Nuclear Cardiology. His research focuses on molecular imaging techniques for the diagnosis and monitoring of cardiovascular diseases.

Education

Bravo earned his medical degree from the University of Valle of Colombia in 2002.[1] He completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a residency in nuclear medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital.[2] He later completed fellowships in cardiology at Brigham and Women's Hospital and the University of Washington Medical Center.[2]

Professional career

Bravo has held several academic and clinical positions at the University of Pennsylvania including Assistant Professor of Radiology, Director of Nuclear Cardiology, Co-director of the Cardiovascular Phenotyping Unit at the Center for Human Phenomic Science (CHPS), Vice Chair of the Radiation Safety Research Oversight Committee,[1] and Chair of the Nuclear Cardiology Governance Committee at Penn Medicine.[1]

Bravo is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and by the American Board of Nuclear Medicine.[2] He is a member of the American College of Cardiology.[3]

Scientific production and research areas

Bravo's research focuses on molecular imaging and tissue characterization in cardiovascular diseases. He has authored over 170 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. As of June 2025, Bravo's h-index was 42 according to Google Scholar.[4]

Myocardial inflammation and cardiac sarcoidosis

Bravo has studied the use of fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (¹⁸F-FDG PET) to evaluate myocardial inflammation, particularly in patients with cardiac sarcoidosis.[5] His work includes dietary preparation protocols such as ketogenic diets,[6] and the use of SGLT2 inhibitors to suppress physiological myocardial glucose uptake.[7]

Infiltrative diseases

Bravo has contributed to the diagnosis of cardiac amyloidosis using 99mTc-PYP SPECT/CT imaging,[8] and to the development of artificial intelligence tools for automated detection.[9] He has also studied early detection of cardiac allograft vasculopathy via PET/CT myocardial flow quantification.[10]

Cardiovascular infections and implanted devices

Bravo participated in international consensus statements on the use of PET/CT and SPECT/CT (with radiolabeled leukocytes) to evaluate cardiovascular infections, including infective endocarditis and device-related complications.[11]

Imaging innovations and machine learning

His research includes deep learning methods for automatic myocardial segmentation in cardiac imaging studies.[12] He has also studied advanced MRI and PET tracers to assess oxidative stress and subclinical inflammation.[13]

Lectures and conference presentations

Bravo has participated as a lecturer and invited speaker in multiple international scientific meetings related to nuclear cardiology and cardiovascular imaging.

  • 2025 – Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR) Annual Conference[14]
  • 2024 – American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC) Scientific Session and Exhibition[15]
  • 2020 – North American Society for Cardiovascular Imaging (NASCI) Annual Meeting[16]

Professional recognition and contributions

  • Editorial author in *JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging* (2024)[17]
  • Faculty, ASNC Virtual Elective[18]
  • Panelist, ASNC Future Leaders Program (2025)[19]
  • Member, ASNC Guidelines & Scientific Statements Committee[20]

Awards and honors

  • 2019 – Blavatnik Family Fellowship, University of Pennsylvania[21]
