Pablo Martín (born 1964 in Barcelona) is an award-winning creative director and graphic designer with over 35 years of working at the forefront of international design. He is globally renowned[1] for producing brand identities, visual communication systems, signage and packaging and for his contribution to newspaper and magazine design.

He joined Efe Cakarel at MUBI as Creative Director[2] in March 2019, running a multi-talented team of video editors and designers developing a broad variety of assets: trailers, posters, brand campaigns and promotional items[3] for multiple markets worldwide, as well as launching the printed publication 'Notebook[4]'.

Early Life

Originally from Barcelona, Spain, Martín studied graphic design at the EINA School of Design of which Martin says “EINA gave me two basic skills: typography, which became an obsession, and visual thinking, thanks to Mario Eskenazi, who introduced us to the work of Alan Fletcher, Bob Gill, Robert Brownjohn and Derek Birdsall”.[5]

Career

Pablo Martín began his career working at Mario Eskenazi’s studio in Barcelona and then with Michael Bierut and Massimo Vignelli at Vignelli Associates in New York. Returning to Barcelona in 1993 he founded Grafica with Fernando Gutiérrez, quickly establishing their reputation as one of the most influential design studios in Spain for over two decades with award-winning work for Camper[6], Metalarte, Phaidon Press and Canal Sur, plus newspapers and magazines including La Vanguardia and Tentaciones, the Friday supplement for El País as well as overseeing the redesign of Elephant magazine [7] in 2014. After Gutiérrez’s departure for Pentagram in 2000, Martín continued to run Grafica for thirteen more years.

In 2012 he co-founded the award-winning[8] brand and design consultancy Atlas [9] [10]with Astrid Stavro from their office in Palma, Mallorca. His work was recognised in 2014 when he won the Spanish National Design and Innovation Award[11], the design profession's highest honour recognising outstanding lifetime achievement in graphic design[12]. Awarded by the Ministry of Economy and Innovation, it is the most prestigious Spanish design award and was handed in person by the King of Spain, Felipe VI.

He is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI), the world’s most prestigious design association, with Martín previously President of AGI Spain[13].

Martín Design and Art Direction (D&AD), SPD[14] and the Art Directors Club of New York and is the recipient of more than 200 design awards.[15]
