Oxford Metrics is a United Kingdom-based smart sensing software company. It serves c.10,000 customers in more than 70 countries, including gaming companies and universities in various nations.[2] Recently, their Vicon technology enabled London’s holographic Abba Voyage experience.[3]

Company History

Oxford Metrics is an AIM[4] listed company which was founded in 1984, and based out of Oxfordshire.[5] Nick Bolton became the CEO in 2005.[6] The business floated on the London Stock Exchange in 2001.[7] The company originally developed its high-speed imaging camera to monitor the movements of people with cerebral palsy. It later branched out into motion-capture animation, with its Vicon technology[8] being used to create effects for television series and Hollywood films including The Mandalorian[9], The Polar Express[10], and Gladiator.[5] Oxford Metrics’ technology was also used to create Abba Voyage, which launched in 2022.[11] The business has made a number of acquisitions and disposals, the most notable being the 2022 sale of its Yotta division for £52 million to Causeway Technologies.[12]

Services and products

Oxford Metrics’ smart sensing Vicon technology is used in the Life Sciences, engineering, entertainment and virtual reality industries. It has been used in films such as Iron Man and Blade Runner 2049 and individuals associated with the technology, were awarded a Technical Achievement Award at the 77th Academy Awards for the development of Vicon motion capture.[15] Vicon is also used in hospitals to improve the care of children with cerebral palsy.[16] The business has previously been a provider of physical asset management software used in the maintenance of street lighting, highways and waste management.[17] Oxford Metrics also previously provided camera tracking technologies through its former 2d3 business. The business won a Primetime Emmy Engineering Award in 2002.[18]

House of Moves is sold by Oxford Metrics to the company’s management team.[23]

2015

Oxford Metrics sold terrain-mapping software operation ‘2d3’ to Insitu, a subsidiary of Boeing Defense, Space & Security, for $25m.[5]

2021

Oxford Metrics acquired video-based movement analysis company Contemplas GmbH.[25]

2022
