Owen Zachary McCarthy is an American entrepreneur and Republican political figure. He is the co-founder of a venture-backed medical devices company MedRhythms and a Republican candidate for Governor of Maine in the 2026 election. [1]
Early life and education
Owen was born and raised in the town of Patten, Maine to Martin and Rachel McCarthy, a third generation logger and second generation lunch lady.[2] He attended the University of Maine where he earned a Bachelor of Biological Engineering on the Pulp and Paper Scholarship[3] and received a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School.[4]
Career
Owen is the co-founder of MedRhythms, a Portland-based medical devices company that utilizes technology and music to improve the rehabilitation of people living with neurological injuries such as stroke, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease.[5][6] Owen served as a trustee of the University of Maine System and is currently [7], president of the Rural Future’s Fund [8], and a board member for the American Telemedicine Association[9] and Junior Achievement Maine[10] .
2026 Gubernatorial Campaign
On June 11, 2026, Owen announced his bid to succeed term-limited Democratic incumbent Janet Mills as the 76th Governor of Maine.[11] A political outsider, his campaign’s priorities include creating economic opportunities, focusing on excellence in outcomes in K-12 education, making Maine more affordable, and reigning in government spending.[12]
Personal life
Owen resides in Gorham, Maine with his wife Holly and their two children.[13] Owen is an avid basketball fan and attends church at the Rock Church in Portland, Maine.
