Ostap Korkuna (Ukrainian:Остап Коркуна; born 26 September 1987 in Lviv) is a Ukrainian American software engineer and executive, co-founder and co-chair of the humanitarian nonprofit organization Nova Ukraine in the San Francisco Bay Area.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
Life and Career
Korkuna holds a Masters degree in Applied Mathematics from Lviv National University in Ukraine, which he represented at the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals in 2008, ranking fourth and winning Gold.[7]. He worked at Facebook[8] before joining People.ai in 2019[9] and becoming a director of engineering.[10]
Non-profit Leadership and Fundraising
Korkuna co-founded Nova Ukraine in 2014 and remains its volunteer co-chair.[11] In February and March 2022, in the first weeks of Russian invasion of Ukraine, he led street rallies in San Francisco, CA to raise awareness about the situation in Ukraine.[1][2] Voice of America Ukraine produced and aired a TV program that covered the history of Nova Ukraine and prominently featured its co-chairs, Bilogorskiy and Korkuna.[4][5] Finland's newspaper of record Helsingin Sanomat Daily explained how Nova Ukraine used technology to scale operations and fundraising, and published profiles and photographs of each Nova Ukraine director, including Korkuna.[6] Under Korkuna's leadership, Nova Ukraine raised funds for humanitarian aid for Ukraine and delivered over $50M worth of aid in 2022.[12]
As part of Charity Navigator's review of Nova Ukraine, Korkuna answered a variety of questions about the operation and accomplishments of Nova Ukraine in two recorded interviews in 2022[13] and 2023[14]. As a result, Charity Navigator scored Nova Ukraine's leadership and flexibility at 100%.[15]
