Marketing Slogan

One plus one does not equal two; two negatives does not make a positive. Growing up does not mean good-bye. Slow down and let the bravery of childhood catch up with you.[3]

Plot

Two troublemaking schoolboys gets their nicknames, Liar No. 1 and Liar No. 2, from the teacher for mischievously pulling pranks and bullying their classmates at school. Through the innocent eyes of Liar No. 1 and Liar No. 2, Orz Boyz!, while illustrating a fanciful, parallel universe, simultaneously portrays the reality of growing up in difficult family situations with a humorous approach toward moments of separation in life and death faced by the two best friends, Liar No. 1 and Liar No. 2.[4]

Revolving around two mischievous schoolboys and best friends, Orz Boyz! can be roughly divided into three episodes. The first episode is about the passing away of the mother of Ally Lin, the girl whom Liar No. 1 has a secret crush on, and Ally's subsequent departure; the second part involves Liar No. 2 revenging against the grown-ups' renege and scheming for his younger sister's kidnapping; the final episode revolves around the choices between the Hyper-Space and the King of Kada, which causes the friendship between Liar No. 1 and Liar No. 2 to fall apart. In the end, Liar No. 1 is taken away by the police for stealing.[5][6]

1. The lonely children learn to be resilient in their own way

Liar No. 1 and Liar No.2 are punished by their teacher to fix books in the library for teasing their classmates. Between their library duties, the two of them often discuss methods to enter the Hyper-Space.[7] Liar No. 1, having a crush on Ally Lin, a cheerful classmate who always greets everyone with a smile, tries to tempt Liar No. 2 with the King of Kada in helping him approach Ally Lin and invite her to join their circle. On the other hand, Liao No. 2, tasked by his grandmother to delivery spirit money to a classmate's house, finds out that the spirit money is for Ally Lin's mother, who has passed away from cancer.[8] One day, when Liar No. 2 tries to stop Ally Lin as instructed by Liar No. 1, Liar No. 2 unexpectedly bursts out and questions Ally Lin why she keeps smiling even when her mother has passed away. Confronted by Liar No. 2's unexpected question, Ally Lin's face gradually turns from a smile to grief and anger. Feeling the unbearable awkwardness, Liao No. 2 runs away. Liar No. 1 and Liar No. 2 figure out a way to enter the Hyper-Space: collecting ten electric fans would get them to the Hyper-Space. Ally Lin visits Liar No. 2's house. While Liao No. 1 is delighted to see Ally Lin, Ally Lin actually comes to bid farewell. Knowing what has happened, Liao No. 1 asks Ally to join them in going to the Hyper-Space and say goodbye to the rest of the world.[9] In the end, Ally Lin leaves a letter saying that they would not feel afraid anymore as long as they remember to smile.[10]

A Brief Episode: The Story of the Magic Flute

In the eyes of the children, the Magic Flute is a fairy tale where the music of the Pied Piper drives away the plague-infested rats. In reality, it is just like those garbage-dumping adults, who chases after the garbage truck that plays music.[11]

2. Separation does not always have to be sad

Liao No. 2's uncle leaves his child at the grandmother's house due to family circumstances. Without much choice, Grandma reluctantly takes care of the sudden addition of a little girl. As time goes on, Liao No. 2 begins to feel that Grandma shows more favoritism toward the younger sibling. When he learns that his uncle is coming to take the younger sibling back, relieving Liar No. 2 of his caregiving responsibilities, Liar No. 2, delighted of the little sister's departure, is excited to go to the zoo with Liar No. 1. However, his uncle ends up not showing up due to unforeseen circumstances, causing Liar No. 2's disappointment once again in the adults' broken promises and the subsequent cancellation of his trip to the zoo. One day, Grandma asks Liar No. 2 to look after the younger sister. Upon returning home, Grandma discovers that the sibling has gong missing. Scolding Liar No. 2, Grandma anxiously seeks help from neighbors to find the missing sister. As Liar No. 2 reluctantly calls out the sibling's name, he gets mesmerized by a limited edition model of the King of Kada along the way. It was only when the other kids remind him of his missing sibling that Liar No. 2 unwillingly returns to his search. Liar No. 2 arrives at Liar No. 1's house and sees a clear water tank filled with water. Liar No. 2 gets into the water tank and submerges himself to temporarily isolate himself from a society filled with lies.[12] Returning home in the evening, Liar No. 2 sees the police and neighbors all gathered outside of the house. Already blaming each other, the quarrel between Grandma and Liar No. 2's aunt-in-law gets even more intense, escalating the chaos when they see Liar No. 2 returning. At the moment, Liar No. 1 sends a message from afar, revealing that the disappearance of the sibling is planned together by Liar No. 1 and Liar No. 2. What comes at their surprise is that the sibling has truly become missing. Grandma cries and prays desperately, while Liar No. 1 and Liar No. 2 nervously search for the little sister on campus. Finally, Liar No. 1 smiles as they find the little sister peacefully sleeping next to Liar No. 1's father.[13]

3. Growing up does not mean saying goodbye.

Rumor has it that sliding down the water slide a hundred times can take you to a different dimension: the Hyper-Space.[14] Liar No. 1 and Liar No. 2 jump on the trampoline and shout that they want to become adults. They assiduously collect discarded bottles to save money from recycling refunds for the trip to the Hyper-Space. One day, Liar No. 2, remembering the limited edition King of Kada he saw earlier, takes the fifty dollars he earned from back massages for his grandmother and spends it on a gachapon. Liar No. 1 happens to see this and criticizes Liar No. 2 for not saving the money for their trip to the Hyper-Space. Unexpectedly, the gachapon contains a coupon for the limited edition King of Kada. Excitedly, they rush to the toy store to redeem the coupon for the King of Kada only to be refused by the shop owner, who claims that the King of Kada is his prized possession. Amidst the commotion of the children, the shop owner gives Liar No. 2 two options: either allowing the shop owner to buy back the King of Kada with three thousand New Taiwan dollars right away or waiting for a few weeks for new stock to arrive. Liar No. 1 immediately chooses to exchange the prize for three thousand dollars. Liar No. 1 believes that, with the money, he can go to the Hyper-Space with Liar No. 2 as they have planned, but Liar No. 2 is deeply disappointed and unable to understand the decision Liar No. 1 has made. Their friendship falls apart. A few days later, Liar No. 2 realizes that Liar No. 1 is missing. Looking for Liar No. 1, Liar No. 2 only finds journalists and police officers around Liar No. 1's house. Suspected of theft, Liar No. 1 has been taken away by the police and social workers permanently since his father, who suffers from mental illness, cannot care for him. Liar No. 2 returns home and asks Grandma to call Liar No. 1's mother, who lives in Hawaii, begging her to bring Liar No. 1 back.[15] When things don't go as he has planned, Liar No. 2 tries asking Liar No. 1's father to make more calls. However, Liar No.1's father, suffering from mental illness, cannot understanding Liar No. 2. All he can do is holding Liar No. 2's hand to his chest and mumbles, "pain."[16]

Finally, Liar No. 2 takes a ride alone to the Hyper-Space. He repeatedly slides down the water slide to say goodbye to everyone. Later, a child struggles to climb to the top of the water slide, which prompts the lifeguard to ask why he has been coming so often. The child says that his father has told him that riding the water slide can get him to the Hyper-Space. Looking towards the direction the child points to, the lifeguard turns out to be the grown-up Liar No. 2.[17]
