Orhan Tanrıkulu (22 February 1937 – 29 March 1989) was a Turkish orchestra conductor, writer, and music researcher. A graduate of the Ankara State Conservatory, he studied conducting in the United States and Europe under Igor Markevitch, Herbert Blomstedt, and Franco Ferrara. In 1973 he gained international recognition in Venice, winning the prize for Best Interpretation of Italian Lyric Music, and the following year received the Diploma di Merito from the Accademia Musicale Chigiana. He later worked as a guest conductor at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo before becoming Artistic Director of both the Ankara State Opera and Ballet and the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet. Tanrıkulu arranged Crimean Tatar folk for orchestra.

Early life and education

Tanrıkulu was born in Çorum, Turkey, in 1937, while his father was serving in the military. He studied at the Ankara State Conservatory under composer İlhan Usmanbaş, graduating with training in conducting and composition.

In 1969, he founded the Ankara Chamber Choir and became musical director of the Halkevleri Chamber Orchestra.

In 1969, Tanrıkulu married the soprano Remziye Alper, of Crimean Tatar origin.

In 1971, Tanrıkulu studied repertoire with Igor Markevitch and Herbert Blomstedt at the Orchestre National de l’Opéra de Monte-Carlo. The same year, he received an Italian government scholarship for conducting, which enabled him to study with Franco Ferrara at the Conservatorio di Musica “Santa Cecilia” in Rome.

In 1973, he conducted Donizetti’s Don Pasquale in Venice, for which he was awarded the prize for Best Interpretation of Italian Lyric Music. In 1974, he attended the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, where he was awarded the Diploma di Merito. In 1975, he worked for a year as a guest conductor at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo.

Career in Turkey

Tanrıkulu returned to Turkey in 1977 and was appointed permanent conductor of the Ankara State Opera. In 1978, he conducted the State Opera’s first international tour. That same year, he led the premiere of Duygu Aykal’s ballet Where Do the Clouds Go...? with music by İlhan Usmanbaş, staged in Ankara for the International Play Association seminar.

He was appointed Artistic Director of the Ankara State Opera and Ballet in 1980, and in 1983 became Superintendent and Artistic Director of the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet, a position he held until his death. During this period he conducted major productions including Grieg’s Peer Gynt, Tüzün’s Midas’ın Kulakları, Puccini’s Tosca, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Şehrazat, documented in contemporary press programs.

In December 1984, Tanrıkulu conducted Verdi’s Macbeth at the Istanbul State Opera, with soprano Remziye Alper in the title role. The performance was covered in the Turkish press, which noted the couple’s collaboration on stage.

International engagements and musical vision

Throughout his career, Tanrıkulu conducted operas and concerts in the United States, Italy, France, Switzerland, Austria, Bulgaria, Romania, and Yugoslavia.

Tanrıkulu’s musical vision included integrating elements of Crimean Tatar folk music into classical settings. He arranged traditional songs such as Karaker Atım, Elmas, and Karşıdan Gördüm Seni for orchestra and piano, many of which were performed by his wife, soprano Remziye Alper.

Media / TV and radio work

In addition to his work in opera and conducting, between 1985 and 1989, Tanrıkulu wrote music articles for magazines such as Orkestra, Musik, Gösteri, Mimar Sinan, and Hürriyet Sanat. His writings primarily focused on Turkish opera, Western music, and composers.

Tanrıkulu was also active in radio. He started his radio programs at Ankara Radio in 1962 and later continued them at Istanbul Radio. He is credited as the producer of Büyük Eserler, a program he prepared and that was featured in the TRT Dinle anniversary series Radyo 3 — 50 Yaşında. Part 2 of the series is titled “Orhan Tanrıkulu” in recognition of his contribution.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Tanrıkulu was actively involved in introducing classical and symphonic music to wider audiences through Turkish national television and radio. He conducted several orchestral broadcasts for TRT (Turkish Radio and Television Corporation), including the televised concert series “Çok Sesli Müzik” (“Polyphonic Music”). This program introduced symphonic repertoire to the general public.[1]

Death and legacy

Tanrıkulu died in a traffic accident in 1989 in Istanbul, Turkey, at the age of 52.[2][3]

His professional and artistic recognition is also reflected in national and international biographical reference sources. [4][5][6][7]
