The surgical specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery focuses on facial trauma surgery, reconstructive surgery of the face, oral cavity, head and neck, mouth, and jaws, as well as facial plastic and cosmetic surgery, including surgery for cleft lip and palate.
The entire craniomaxillofacial complex—the anatomical area of the mouth, jaws, face, skull, head, and neck as well as related structures—is treated by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, a regional specialized surgeon. A degree in medicine, dentistry, or both may be necessary for oral and maxillofacial surgery, depending on the national jurisdiction.
