Ongaro & Sons is an American plumbing, heating, and air conditioning contractor. Founded in 1932 in Fairfax, California, by Ernest V. Ongaro, the company has been operated by four generations of the Ongaro family and serves Marin and Sonoma counties in Northern California's North Bay region.
History
Ernest V. Ongaro, the son of Italian immigrants, started a plumbing business in 1932 in Fairfax, California, in the building that later housed the music venue 19 Broadway. The firm moved to San Anselmo in 1938. In 1948 the company became one of the original members of the Redwood Empire chapter of the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association of California (PHCC).
The founder's three sons joined the company: Donald and Ernest P. Ongaro completed plumbing apprenticeships, and Richard Ongaro trained in sheet metal and heating work. Richard ran the sheet metal and heating operations, Ernest P. the plumbing work, and Donald the business side.
Four of the founder's grandsons, brothers Ernest J. and Paul Ongaro and their cousins Dean and Mitch Ongaro, became the third generation of owners. Under a rule set down by the founder, family members were required to work elsewhere before joining the company. In the early 1990s the owners closed the retail part of the plumbing business after concluding it was unprofitable. In 2001 the company purchased Crane & Son Plumbing & Heating, a Santa Rosa firm established in 1945, extending its operations from Marin County into Sonoma County.
In 2021 Paul Ongaro was one of two recipients of PHCC's national Plumbing Contractor of the Year award. A November 2021 profile in NorthBay biz reported that the company planned to move its Santa Rosa operations to a larger facility in Petaluma the following year while keeping its San Anselmo shop open.
Operations
Ongaro & Sons provides plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning services to residential and commercial customers. According to a 2021 profile in NorthBay biz, the company averaged 50 to 70 service calls a day and about 2,200 installations a year, and was preparing to add standby generator installation and electrical services. The company has performed service work at San Quentin State Prison for decades.
As of 2021, the company was led by president Ernest J. Ongaro, and members of the family's fourth generation worked in the business.
