The Swedish photobook company Once Upon (officially known as Once Upon Publishing AB) is most well-known for its mobile app which enables users to create and purchase printed photo books and prints. With its headquarters located in Skellefteå Sweden the company operates in several European and international markets.[1]
History
Once Upon was founded in 2016 by Lina Andersson, Johan Schiller, Linus Nilsson and Hans Eklund, with initial development supported by design agency North Kingdom.[2][3]
The idea of a photo book mobile app was created by Lina when she realized she didn't have a photo album of her daughter despite the large number of photos on her phone.[4]
The mobile version of the app launched in 2017 and a web app was released in 2022, enabling cross-platform creation of photo books.[5]
Products
The Once Upon platform is available as an iOS and Android mobile app and a web app, allowing users to create and edit photobooks across different devices. [6]
Growth and funding
Together with Spintop Ventures growth investor Verdane led a round reported to be worth over €10 million in January 2021.[7][8]
Independent Swedish tech outlet Breakit has reported on the company’s financial trajectory, including a return to profit and revenue approaching SEK 300 million.[9][10] Public company registers also list 2024 revenue and headcount.[11]
Recognition
Founder and CEO Lina Andersson was named “Sweden’s Most Important Female Entrepreneur of the Year 2025” (Årets viktigaste kvinnliga entreprenör) by Dagens industri.[12][13]
The company achieved B Corp Certification in 2023 for its verified social and environmental performance.[14]
