Omar Torres (born October 14, 1981)[1] is an American politician who is the San José City Councilmember-Elect for District 3 which encompasses Downtown San José. He will be replacing Raul Peralez and will be officially sworn in on January 1, 2023. Currently, he is serving as a trustee for the San José-Evergreen Community College District Board of Education. Previously, he served as a trustee for the Franklin-McKinley School District Board of Education in San José from 2014-2018. [2]
Early life
Omar Torres was born and raised in San José, California. He grew up in the Guadalupe-Washington neighborhood which is located immediately south of Downtown San José. He is the third child born out of five siblings. His parents worked as packagers at the Del Monte Cannery near Downtown San José. He attended Washington Elementary School, Herbert Hoover Middle School, and Abraham Lincoln High School.[3] After witnessing a drive by shooting in his neighborhood at the age of fourteen, Omar was inspired to pursue a career in public service. He attended San José City College and transferred to San José State University. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 2011. [4]
San Jose City Council Campaign
In the June 7, 2022 Primary Election, Omar Torres placed first out of five candidates by winning 44.18% of the votes.[5] In the November 8, 2022 General Election, he defeated his opponent, Irene Smith, by securing 65.62% of the votes. [6] He will be the first gay man of color to be elected to San José City Council. [7]
