Olivia Frances Tonge (11 November 1858-1949) was a Welsh scientific illustrator.

Career

Tonge was prolific across a number of creative disciplines, including metalwork and woodcarving. Having temporarily moved away from painting upon starting a family, she focused on writing - financially supporting her family with editorial work after the death of her husband.

Tonge once again turned to painting when her daughters were grown. She travelled to India at aged 50 in 1908-1910, and again 1912-1913 - during which she filled 16 sketchbooks which were later donated to the Natural History Museum Library. The subject matter of these journals was broad - covering everything from transport to jewellery to local sweets, particularly drawing inspiration from the natural world.[1] A preface entry in one of her sketchbook states:

Personal life

Olivia Frances Tonge was born on November 11, 1858 in Gwenfain, Wales. Olivia marries Dinely Fowler at age 19, to whom she had two daughters.- Olivia Frances Tonge died on 1949. Tonge's father was a naturalist and painter, and some have speculated this is where she learnt watercolour naturalist painting. Her Father had served in the Royal Navy, as well as sailing to Australia, where he created watercolour naturalist drawings for Captain John Lort Stork's book Discovery in Australia.[2]
