Oliver Kempkens (Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found.; 6 June 1983) is a German manager, author, ex-Chief Product owner (CPO) at sanctioned, Russian state-owned bank Sberbank.[1] (renamed Sber [2]). He is also a guest professor [3], lecturer [4], and speaker [5] on innovation and leadership in Russia.

Education

Oliver Kempkens studied law at Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich, psychology at FU Hagen, and graduated in Mediation from European University Frankfurt/Oder.

Career

Since 2013, Kempkens has worked in Russia, primarily in the academic sector (SKOLKOVO School of Management [6], British School of Design [7], Surgut State University), as a guest professor and lecturer on topics related to innovation, such as design thinking, agile, and behavioral economics. In 2018, he was the only foreigner to teach the Executive MBA for Russian State Officials in Sirius, Sochi.

In 2019, he joined Sberbank and is believed to be one of the highest-ranking non-Russian employees in the organization.

He is also the co-founder of a company that claims to be developing a solid-state supercapacitor in St. Petersburg.

Views on Sanctions

In an article published in FAZ [8] on April 3, 2023, Kempkens argued that the Russian economy would gradually shrink due to the sanctions imposed by the international community since February 2022. He also stated that while the sanctions had achieved their intended purpose, the way they were framed by German politicians suggested that Russia would quickly lose the war with them.

In an interview with the Berliner Zeitung [9] on April 20, 2023, Kempkens expressed his belief that the collective sanctioning of Russian oligarchs was not expedient, as many of the sanctioned members of the so-called Russian elite were potential liberals (known as "technocrats") who were being pushed in the opposite direction by the sanctions.

Memberships and Awards

Kempkens is a member of the German-Russian Young Leaders group, which is designed to connect the next generation of German and Russian businessmen. His book, "Design Thinking - All Tools in One Book[10]", is one of the best-selling business books in Russia in recent years. Under his leadership, Sberbank's new B2B product won the Red Dot Award in 2021 [11], and his teams were recognized with the British Onboarding Award in 2020 and the Russian Award for the Best HR Initiative in 2021 [12].

Trivia

Kempkens owns the largest collection of Russian Travel Posters from the Soviet times [13].
