Olaf Wipperfürth (born June 4, 1966 in Düsseldorf) is a German photographer working in fashion, portraiture, and contemporary art.

Biography

Since the 1990s, he has lived and worked in Paris. In 1997, he began collaborating with Belgian designer Dries van Noten and has since contributed to international publications such as Vogue, Numéro, Interview, and Rolling Stone, as well as campaigns for Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Nike. His work has been exhibited internationally, including the solo exhibition Disko Bay at the Museo Civico di Zoologia in Rome (2022), at the Goethe-Institut KunstRaum during Rome Art Week (2022), and the Interstate/s series at Remèdes Galerie during the PhotoDays in Paris (2024). His work is part of the public collection of the CNAP – Centre national des arts plastiques.[1]

Life and work

Olaf Wipperfürth studied philosophy and art history at the universities of Duisburg and Düsseldorf, focusing on contemporary aesthetics. In 1999, he earned a PhD from the University of Duisburg-Essen with a dissertation entitled Der ästhetische Restwert: Bemerkungen zu einer Ästhetik des Augenblicks ("The Aesthetic Residue: Remarks on an Aesthetics of the Instant").[2]

He moved to Paris in 1994, initially working as a fashion and portrait photographer. In 1997, he began a long-standing collaboration with Dries Van Noten, contributing to publications such as The Fashion Book, the exhibition catalogue Dries Van Noten (Les Arts Décoratifs), and Dries Van Noten – 100 collections.[3] His photography has appeared in magazines such as Vogue, Interview, and GQ, and in campaigns for Dior, Balmain, Kenzo, Chaumet, Nike, and others. He also shot editorial stories for the FAZ-Magazin, including "Fabrik der Moderne" and "Die Zehner Jahre" (2019).[4][5][6][7][8][9]

He has photographed numerous public figures, including Jane Birkin, David Beckham, Jon Kortajarena, Devon Aoki, Stephen Dorff, Tony Ward, Ralph Herforth, Gaël Monfils, and Katja Riemann.[10][11]

His early projects include Glas – Quadratur (1996), a photo book from Amsterdam's red-light district, as well as the Windowblack series and the video installation Aquarium, exhibited in Paris (2004).

Since 2020, his practice has increasingly focused on mixed media, combining photography with painting, drawing, and installation.[12][13] His project Disko Bay (2019–2022), developed during an artist residency in Ilulissat, Greenland, addresses climate change. In a 2025 interview with Mia Le Journal, he stated that he photographs “memory, time, and absence,” blurring the lines between documentation and fiction.[14]
