Ola Oresanya is a Nigerian environmental consultant, waste management expert with over 33 years of experience in the field and has held several positions in Nigeria, including President of the Lagos Waste Forum , Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA)[3] , Special Adviser on Environment to Governor Dapo Abiodun, and currently serves as the Commissioner for Environment in Ogun State and CEO of Globetech Remedial Ltd. [4]

Early Life and Education

Oresanya was born in 1967 in Ogun State, Nigeria. He obtained a Bachelor's degree in Geology from the University of Ibadan, and Master's degree in Environmental Management and Ecology from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife. He also attended Harvard Kennedy School at Harvard University, Massachusetts, U.S.A, where he completed an executive education program and gained additional expertise in environmental management.[5]

Career

Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA)

Oresanya was appointed MD/CEO of LAWMA in May,23 2005. [6] During his tenure, he oversaw the transformation of LAWMA into an efficient waste management organization. He introduced a number of innovative initiatives, such as the introduction of more trucks for waste collection, the development of new landfill sites, and the promotion of recycling. As a result of his leadership, Lagos became one of the most efficient waste management cities in Africa.[7]

After serving for 10 years as the Managing Director of LAWMA, Ola Oresanya resigned from his position on July 7, 2015 [8]. He was re-appointed again by by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for the second time (December 2018 to July 2019). [9] Under his leadership, Lagos became one of the most efficient waste management cities in Africa, with improved infrastructure and sustainable waste management practices.

Ola Oresanya's Firing from LAWMA: Rumors and Denial

In June 2015, there were rumors that Ola Oresanya, the General Manager of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), had been fired by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. The rumors were shared by several news outlets, including Sahara Reporters.[10] However, Oresanya denied the rumors in an interview with Sahara Weekly. He said that he was still in charge of LAWMA and that the rumors were false. [11]

The rumors about Oresanya's firing came shortly after Akinwunmi Ambode dissolved all boards of parastatals and agencies in the state, including LAWMA. The dissolution also affected several other high-level officials, including Ms Olayinka Fashola, the sister of former Governor Babatunde Fashola.

Lagos Waste Forum

Oresanya served as President of the Lagos Waste Forum from 2010 to 2015. [12] The Lagos Waste Forum is a collaborative platform that brings together waste management stakeholders to address waste-related challenges in Lagos State. During his tenure, the Lagos Waste Forum promoted sustainable waste management practices and created awareness about environmental issues. [13]

Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA)

Oresanya was appointed CEO of OGWAMA in 2019. [14] In this role, he oversees the waste management operations and initiatives in Ogun State. He has introduced a number of initiatives to improve waste management in Ogun State, such as the promotion of waste segregation at the source and the establishment of a new waste treatment plant. [15]

Commissioner for Environment, Ogun State

Currently, Ola Oresanya holds the position of Commissioner for Environment in Ogun State.[16] In this role, he oversees the environmental management and development strategies of the state. [17] Under his leadership, he has developed a new waste management master plan for Ogun State, promoted waste segregation at the source, and established a new waste treatment plant. He increased the number of trucks for waste collection, developed new landfill sites, promoted recycling, and reduced the environmental impact of waste management.[18]

Other Positions

Oresanya has also served as the Special Adviser on Environment [19] to Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and the Commissioner for Environment in Ogun State. [20]
