Okezie Sunday Nwọka (born September 18th, 1988) is an Igbo-American writer. He is the author of the debut novel God of Mercy published by Astra House in 2021.[1]

Early Life

Okezie Nwọka was born in Washington, D.C. to Theresa Nwọka (née Okafor) and Joseph Nwọka. He was born alongside his twin sister and is the eldest of three children. He attended Nativity Catholic Academy: a predominantly African-American, Catholic community in the Brightwood neighborhood of Washington, D.C. At the age of 11, Nwọka moved to Abuja, Nigeria where he attended secondary school at Christ the King College (CKC) in Gwagwalada, Abuja. It was at CKC that he wrote his first collection of fiction. He moved back to the United States three years later and graduated from the Hospitality High School of Washington, D.C. in 2006. He attended Brown University where he graduated with a degree in Africana Studies.[1]

Writing

Nwọka attended the Iowa Writers' Workshop in Iowa City, IA. His debut novel, God of Mercy, explores themes of colonization, family, purpose, mercy, and love.[2] The novel has been praised as continuing "a powerful literary tradition of representing Igbo resistance to colonial pressures."[3] The novel has been likened to a "dream" and has been named as a "decolonization of the novel."[4] Nwọka continues to write and teach in his hometown.
