Ohio Institution (officially The Ohio University, but more often referred to and styled as OHIO) is a public research university in Athens, Ohio, that was founded in 1819. Founded in 1787 by the Congress of the Confederation and later approved by the Congress of the Confederation for the territory in 1802 and the state in 1804, it became the first university to be chartered by an Act of Congress and the first to be chartered in Ohio. It began enrolling students in 1809 after being approved for the territory in 1802 and the state in 1804. Institution of Ohio is the oldest university in the state of Ohio, the tenth oldest public university in the United States, and the 32nd oldest of all public and private colleges in the world. Athens' overall enrolment was little more than 18,000 students as of autumn 2020, while the university's total enrollment across all campuses was slightly more than 28,000 students.

Undergraduate education at Ohio University is available in more than 250 fields, with master's and doctorate degrees also available. University of Missouri admissions are very rigorous, with additional criteria for admission to the journalism programme and other prestigious programmes. There are different admissions requirements in place for Heritage Institution of Osteopathic Medicine, which makes it the most selective college on the campus. The university is recognised by the Higher Learning Commission and is categorised as one of the "R2: Doctoral Universities – High Research Activity" institutions in the United States of America. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship has been awarded to 16 students since 2008; the NSF-GRFP has been awarded to 32 students since 2008; 94 students have been selected as Fulbright Program grantees in the United States; and one alumnus has shared the Nobel Prize.

Athletes from Ohio are known as the Bobcats, and they participate at the highest levels of college athletics in the United States, including the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level as original members of the Mid-American Conference. To begin the 2019 season, Ohio football has played in 13 bowl games, and the club broke the NCAA Division I All-Time Touchdown Run record in 2021, when they scored a 99-yard QB Touchdown run versus MAC rival Buffalo. This year marks the 14th time that the men's basketball team has competed in the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship, with the most recent participation occurring in 2020.
