Ogahi (pseudonym; full name is Muhammad Riza Erniyozbek oglu) (17.12.1809 - 14.12.1874) - Uzbek poet, historian, translator.

Life

He was born in 1809 in Qiyot village near Khiva.[1] Studied in Khiva madrasahs. He mastered Arabic, Persian, and Turkish languages. He participated in the conversations of famous poets and scientists, fans of literature of Khorezm. He diligently studied eastern classical works, especially Navoi's works.

After the death of his uncle and teacher Munis in 1829, Allakuli Khan (Khan of Khiva in 1825-1842) appointed Ogahi as the successor of Munis to the position of mirab (A profession engaged in the distribution of water to agricultural lands). From this period, Ogahiy was involved in the life of the people and the affairs of the palace. In an area where agriculture is based on artificial irrigation, the position of mirab was more complex and responsible. However, Ogahi still found time for scientific and literary research. While engaged in intense social and political work, he fell from a horse and his leg paralyzed (1845). In 1857, he resigned from the position of a mirab. Until the end of his life, he lived in a materially needy and sick condition.

Family

Muhammad Riza, who lost his father early, was brought up and taught by his uncle, the famous historian and poet Shir Muhammad ibn Amir Iwaz-biy, nicknamed as Munis. Later, he continued his studies in one of the madrasahs in the capital of the Khiva Khanate and devoted himself to learning Arabic and Persian languages.

He studied with great love the works of the classics of Eastern peoples Navoi, Fuzuli, Bedil and others.

Works

At the age of 52-55, Ogahi created the collection "Lovers' Talisman". Poems written by the poet are very diverse. Some glorify pure love, others glorify Sufi ideals, and others glorify personal experiences.

He is the author of historical works "Riyaz ud-Davla", "Zubdat ut-Tavorikh", "Jomi ul-Vakiati Sultani", "Gulshani State"[2] and "Shahid ul-Ikbol". The work "Riyaz ud-Davla" described the history of Khorezm in 1825-1842. The history of Khorezm in 1843-1846 was also described in "Zubdat ut-Tawarikh". "Jami ul-Wakiati Sultani" is devoted to the history of Khorezm in 1846-1855. "Gulshani State" covered the history of 1856-1865 years. Ogahi's last work "Shahid ul-Iqbal" was dedicated to the years 1865-1872. Ogahi became famous for his poetic translations of the works of Nizami, Amir Khusraf Dehlavi, Sa'di, Jami, Hilali and others into Uzbek. Ogahi was a true innovator in the field of translation.
