Odd Hugo is an Estonian band formed in 2012 in Tartu, Estonia. The group performs music that blends folk, rock, and blues, and has released two studio albums as of 2025. They have participated in multiple music festivals across Europe and have received national music awards and nominations in Estonia.
History
Formation and debut album (2012–2013)
Odd Hugo was formed by musicians Rando Kruus and Oliver Vare in 2012. Additional members joined later to complete the lineup. The band released its self-titled debut album, Odd Hugo, in 2013. The record was reviewed in local media, with Müürileht describing it as "charming in its contrast between sadness and playful gypsy-eyed performance".[1]
Pocket and subsequent activity (2015–present)
The group released their second album, Pocket, in 2015. According to a review in Müürileht, the album combined jazz, folk, and brass instrumentation, and was described as “hauntingly original”.[2] As of 2025, the track "Kissing in the Falling Rain" had become the group's most-streamed song on Spotify.
Odd Hugo has performed at a number of festivals in Estonia and abroad, including Tallinn Music Week, Positivus Festival, EUROPAVOX, Intsikurmu Festival, and Fusion Festival.[3][4]
Media and broadcasts
In 2014, Odd Hugo became the first Estonian band to perform on the Dutch radio program 3voor12.[5]
Musical style
The band’s sound incorporates elements of indie folk, post-rock, and baroque pop. Their instrumentation includes guitars, brass, woodwind, and synthesizers. Their musical style has drawn comparisons to acts such as Bon Iver, The National, and Sigur Rós.
