O Embargo is a short story by Portuguese novelist Jose Saramago, recipient of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Literature. Originally published in 1973 in Portuguese, it was later included in Saramago's 1978 short story collection Objecto Quase. Subsequently, that collection was translated into English by Giovanni Pontiero, and published under the title The Lives of Things in 2012 by Verso.[1]
The first edition of O Embargo was issued as a 1973 Christmas gift to friends of the Lisbon, Portugal publishing company Estúdios Cor where Saramago worked first as an editor and translator, and then as a journalist.
In 2010, the story was the basis for the film Embargo directed by António Ferreira.
