Northern Data AG is a multinational corporation headquartered in Frankfurt that specialises in Supercomputers solutions.[1]

History

Northern Data AG was brought into being through a Mergers and acquisitions of Germany Northern Bitcoin AG and United States Whinstone US, Inc..[2] The former was specialised in Bitcoin network mining and building mobile Data center for Supercomputer , mostly using their units in the Norway Lefdal mine data center, powered by renewable energies.[3] The latter was establishing and operating data centers, for example in the United States, Sweden and the Netherlands. The merger was announced in November 2019 and completed in early 2020.[2]

In April 2020 the company acquired Canada Kelvin Emtech Group, also specialized in data centers.[4] Customers associated with Northern Data AG include companies such as Canaan Inc. or SBI Crypto.[5][6]

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 the market for HPC data centers expanded.[7] Many homeoffices were set up due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns and Travel restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Videotelephony became common and Pharmacy and medical research require a lot of computing power.[1][7]

Northern Data AG is an Aktiengesellschaft and listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.[8]

Products & services

Northern Data provides solutions for Supercomputer with stationary and mobile High tech Data center[9] The data centers are set up and controlled with artificial intelligence and self-developed software and offer multiple times the performance of regular computers.[1][10]

As of 2020, Northern Data AG is building the world's biggest HPC data center in Rockdale, Texas.[3] It is supposed to amount to an power output of up to 1 Watt by the end of 2020 and 3,6 GW by 2023.[11] With one of the concerns for HPC data centers being power consumption, Northern Data focuses on sites with access to Renewable energy sources. In Texas, huge amounts of power are generated through Wind farm, offering cheap and renewable energy.[3] It is financed by the customers who can rent computing power from these HPC centers.[6]

Besides the center in Rockdale, Northern Data i.a. operates mobile data centers in the Lefdal mine data center, a former olivine mine in Lefdal (Norway).[12] Located next to a Fjord, the mine provides optimal conditions for running a data centre with renewable energy from Hydroelectricity and water cooling from the nearby Fjord.[13][14][15]

The company's Computer hardware and software technologies are designed for uses in blockchain applications, artificial intelligence, Streaming media, Self-driving car as well as scientific and engineering endevours, among other things.
