Norean R. Sharpe is an American author and academic, who has been a professor and administrator for nearly 35 years. Over the course of her career, she has taught at Bowdoin College, Babson College, Georgetown University, St. John’s University, and Williams College.

She is currently Visiting Professor at Williams College and most recently served as Dean and the Joseph H. and Maria C. Schwartz Distinguished Professor, The Peter J. Tobin College of Business at St. John’s University from 2016 to 2023. Her previous appointment was Senior Associate Dean of the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Sharpe graduated from Mount Holyoke College and earned her Ph.D. in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia in 1987.

Career

During her term as Dean of the Peter J. Tobin College of Business, Sharpe notably improved the reputation of the Tobin College of Business and ramped up the rankiing of the College to #38 by focusing on strengthening recruitment of students and faculty; enhancing the learning environment for students; launching the Tobin CEO Seminar Series; reaching out to alumni to grow the Tobin College Board of Advisors; raising funds for endowed faculty chairs and student scholarships; growing the Tobin Endowment to nearly $150M; working with the Career Services Center to increase student access to full-time jobs; and collaborating with faculty to create new global opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Sharpe has been involved in not-for-profit organizations since founding the DOME (Diversity and Outreach in Mathematics and Engineering) Foundation in 2007 and has served on boards at Year-Up, the Thurgood Marshall Academy charter school, the Fabretto Children’s Foundation, and the Global STEM Education Center. She was nominated and elected as a member of the elite organization for women CEOs, the Women's Forum of New York in 2017, and currently serves on the Education Fund for the Women’s Forum.

In 2005, a Dutch company (KIT Publishers) published the first edition of Living with the Dutch: An American Family in The Hague – a whimsical perspective on her observations while traveling extensively, studying the local language and culture, dealing with expatriate schools, and raising two children abroad. At the time, reviews of her book and author interviews were published extensively in both the American and Dutch press in The Netherlands. The 2nd Edition of her book Living with the Dutch was released in 2021 by Central Park South Publishing in New York, NY.

Sharpe is also the lead author of the textbook, Business Statistics (with Richard De Veaux and Paul F. Velleman) now in it’s 4th Edition with Pearson.
