Non-binary gender

In gender identity, non-binary or genderqueer refers to identities that are neither male nor female – identities that exist outside of the traditional gender binary. Even though some non-binary persons do not believe themselves to be transgender, non-binary identities are included in the transgender category because non-binary people often identify with a gender that is different from their given sex.

Those who identify as non-binary may identify as an intermediate or distinct third gender, identify with more than one gender, identify with no gender (agender), or have a shifting gender identification, among other options (genderfluid). Unlike cisgender persons, non-binary people may identify with a wide range of sexual orientations, just as cisgender people can identify with a range of sexual orientations. In addition, being non-binary is not the same as being intersex; the vast majority of intersex persons identify as either male or female.

When seen as a collective, non-binary persons exhibit a wide range of gender expressions, with others rejecting gender "identities" completely. Some non-binary persons, such as trans men and trans women, are medically treated for gender dysphoria, which might include surgery or hormones.
