Noel Sales Barcelona (born 27 December 1980) is a Filipino poet, fictionist, essayist, journalist, author, independent researcher, PR practitioner, cultural and social critic from the Philippines.[1] He is also a certified paranormal researcher and spiritual consultant, using his spiritual gifts to help people and initiate meaningful social and personal change.[2]

Early Life and education

Noel Sales Barcelona was born at the Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital in Sta. Cruz, Manila on December 27, 1980. He finished his primary and elementary studies in Concepcion Elementary School in Malabon City in 1994. He was the valedictorian of his batch. He was a Fund for Assistance to Private Education (FAPE) scholar during high school, and finished his secondary education in Governor Andres Pascual College in Navotas City in 1998, where he was the Second Honorable Mention.

Meanwhile, took Bachelor of Science in Information Technology at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in Sta. Mesa, Manila in 1998 but have to file a leave of absence due to a grave illness. He went back to the university in 1999 only to switch courses from BSIT to Bachelor of Arts Major in Filipino language with a minor in Mass Communication. He stayed in PUP until 2004.

Journalistic career

He began contributing to local news publications since 2000. He became the proofreader, reporter, and then section editor of the progressive newspaper in Filipino, Pinoy Weekly.[1] He also became a correspondent for the investigative newsweekly, Bulatlat.com, from 2006 to 2010.[1] He also became a diocesan correspondent for CBCPNews.com while serving as a stringer for one of the Philippines' oldest newspaper in the English language, The Manila Times.[3] He also used to contribute to the Philippines Graphic magazine and the New York-based Filipino-American newspaper, Philippine Times.[4]

In 2020, during the pandemic, he became the founding editor of Daloy-Likha magazine, an art and culture magazine published by Daloy-Likha International Arts and Nature Society, Inc.[1] Currently, he is writing and editing for Pilipinas Today while also do freelancing with HRD Magazine as an SEO writer, focusing on software reviews and specialized articles.[5]

Awards and publications

As a poet, he bagged the second place at the prestigious Gawad Pandaylipi sa Tula in 2002.[1] Barcelona has become one of the fellows of the 14th Lopez Jaena Journalism Workshop in 2005. In 2012, he became one of the judges in a blog writing competition titled "Kamalayang Kalayaan 3," alongside Lourd de Veyra of Radioactive Sago Project.[6]

Aside from these, his essays, short stories and poems became part of different anthologies here in the Philippines. His essay about the national hero, the polymath, Jose P. Rizal appeared in the anthology Rizal ng Bayan in 2020.[7] His latest work, a critical research about fandoms in the Philippines, became part of an anthology published by the Ateneo de Manila press.[8]
