No Nada was an underground Boston-region indie band that was active from 2009-2012. The band consisted of Brandon Hagen (Guitar + Vocals), Drew McDonald (Guitar + Synth), Richard Arnold (Drums), Michael Cangemi (Bass), and Zachary Brazao (Saxophone + Melodica). [1] The band is often considered a precursor to Vundabar.

Band History

Most of the band's history is unclear, especially the early days. The members of No Nada met in middle school, and played school related open-mics and fundraisers until the band played their first ever non-school-related gig in 2009, at an event called Scitstock, which was a celebration of Woodstock. Another early non-school show was at an “underground show in a warehouse just a few streets away from Twin Donuts” in the Boston neighborhood of Allston[2]. From 2010-11, there isn't much, if any information available online other than a few songs from gigs posted on YouTube. In 2012, when most members were either in their junior or senior year, media began to appear again. On January 5th, the band's school newspaper wrote an article about them[3]. In March, they performed a show posted on YouTube, and in July, another article was created, this time by an outside source. That article also mentioned the band Vundabar.

Vundabar + The End of No Nada

Vundabar is a Boston based indie band that was formed in 2012 by Brandon Hagen (Guitar + Vocals) and Drew McDonald (Drums). The band later added Zack Abramo (Bass) to the lineup. In 2012, No Nada was doing well, playing shows and gathering a rather cult following amongst their peers. But around that time, Vundabar began to form, containing two members of No Nada. It is unclear how exactly No Nada came to an end, it is theoretically tension between band members, but by 2013, only Vundabar remained.

Musical Style

No Nada's style is surf-tinged indie rock. An article desrcibes them: "With its modern sound and clever choruses, No Nada falls into the Indie/Alternative Rock category." Hagen hoped to eventually focus the band on a “synth-dance-opera-pop” style. As group, the band described their sound as "punk/dance/indie.”
