Nika Pfeifer, also known as Judith Nika Pfeifer, is an Austrian writer, poet, and transmedia artist. Her work combines elements of text, sound, and visual art. She currently lives and works between Vienna and Brussels.
Education
Pfeifer studied Political Science and Communication at the University of Vienna and the Università di Pavia. Pfeifer holds a PhD, which she earned through interdisciplinary research at the University of Vienna and Lancaster University. Additionally, she attended courses in Language Arts at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the Vienna Poetry School.
Literary Work
Pfeifer is the author of several poetry collections, including nichts ist wichtiger. ding kleines du (2012), manchmal passiert auch minutenlang gar nichts (2015), TUCSONICS (2019, 2022), and TIGER TOAST (2024),[1] as well as a short story collection, zwischen.Prosa (2015), and the novel Violante (2017).[2] Her writing has appeared in literary journals and anthologies, including kolik[3] and the Jahrbuch der Lyrik (published by Schöffling & Co.) in 2017[4] and 2019[5]. She also co-authored the radio play BABY, BABY! Luftpost für Janis, in collaboration with Milena Kipfmüller, Klaus Janek, and Ruth Johanna Benrath, which was nominated for the Ö1 radio drama awards.[6]
Audio and Video Projects
Pfeifer has worked on audio projects, including the radio plays Drahtseilakt[7] and BABY, BABY! Luftpost für Janis[6], in collaboration with Milena Kipfmüller, Klaus Janek, and Ruth Johanna Benrath, nominated for the Ö1 radio drama awards.
Pfeifer has produced several short films, including keep on dreaming no. 3 (2023), which was presented as part of the short film series PRESTO, curated by Thomas Ballhausen, at Schaubühne Lindenfels during the Leipzig Book Fair.[8] She has also produced duda (2015), an audio installation for Artists & Poets / Dial-a-Poem at Secession Wien, which could also be accessed via telephone.[9] In 2022, Pfeifer created the video collage poetry – ide – sfd: the wishful blue of this sky there to commemorate Christian Ide Hintze (1953–2012). The work was presented at Metro Kino Vienna as part of the Vienna Poetry School's 30th anniversary and featured statements by Jürgen Berlakovich, FALKNER, Bodo Hell, Heike Fiedler, Jörg Piringer, Fernando Rendón, Peter Rosei, Javier Sagarna, Ed Sanders, Anne Waldman, Fritz Ostermayer, among others.[10]
Academic Engagements
Pfeifer has held guest professorships as a Max Kade Fellow at Georgetown University and at the University of Arizona, and through the Goethe-Institut’s BangaloResidency program[11] at the Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology in Bangalore. Awards and Residencies
Pfeifer has received numerous literary fellowships and awards. She was awarded the Reinhard-Priessnitz-Preis in 2012 and the Bruno Kreisky Anerkennungspreis for Political Writing in 2002 (as co-author). She was a finalist for the Werner Bräunig Preis (2010) and the FM4 Wortlaut Literature Prize (2009). She has held artist residencies and fellowships internationally, including at Villa Waldberta (Munich), Künstlerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf (Brandenburg), Villa Sarkia (Finland), Lahore Literature Festival with the Austrian Embassy in Pakistan, Paliano (Italy), the bangaloREsidency in Bengaluru (Goethe-Institut), and Lafayette College and Georgetown University in the United States as a Max Kade Fellow.[13]
