Nika Babayan (born March 24, 1955, Yerevan, Armenian SSR), is an Armenian music producer and manager.

Early life and career

Nika Babayan was born on March 24, 1955, in Yerevan, Armenian SSR. Graduating from the Yerevan State University of Foreign Languages (now Yerevan Brusov State University of Languages and Social Sciences) in the period of 1979-1991 was Executive Secretary of the Armenian Republican Council for Foreign Students Affairs, Ministry of Higher Education of Armenia.

In 1990-1993 was manager of the Armenian State TV and Radio Chamber Choir. During those years the choir toured intensively in Europe and Asia. In 1991 the choir became 3rd prize-winner of the Arnhem International Choral Competition [1] (the Netherlands), in 1992 it won the Grand Prix and Golden medal at Takarazuka International Chamber Chorus Competition (Japan).[2]

In 1995 Nika Babayan has established the Cadence Music Centre [3](NGO) representing the leading Armenian musicians internationally; organizing international music festival, competitions and master-classes in Armenia; producing CDs and DVDs of known Armenian artists.

In 2000-2003 was General Manager of the Armenian State Philharmonic Orchestra and Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall.

Since 1996 is member of the ISPA (International Society for the Performing Arts Foundation, New York) [4] [5]and the IAMA (International Artists Managers Association, London).

In the period of 2003-2007 was elected member of the Board of Directors of the ISPA.

Married, has a son.

Festivals and events

Among most important events could be mentioned four editions of the Yerevan International Music Festival , two editions of the Yerevan International World Music Festival, six editions of the Yerevan International Tango Festival , two editions of the All-Armenian Piano Competition, five editions of the National Stephan Elmas Music Competition, Swiss Music Festival in Armenia, two editions of the Armenian-Austrian Music Festival and master-classes in Yerevan. In the period of 1991-2023 there were organized over 1500 concerts of Armenian orchestras, choirs, ensembles, instrumentalists and vocalists abroad and over 1000 concerts and music events in Armenia with participation of world famous musicians from about 50 countries.

In the period of 2000-2019 the Cadence Music Centre provided with orchestra and conductor concert and recording projects of Lebanese singer Fairuz and composer Ziad Rahbani.

In the period of 2008-2022 the international orchestra managed by Nika Babayan has performed the “Qatar” Symphony (created by composer Dr. Salem Abdul Kareem[8]) in most prestigious venues in Doha, Istanbul, Madrid, Berlin and London.

In the period of December 2009 – December 2010 has coordinated over 30 events within the frames of “Armenia Up Close” Festival taken place in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

In 2010 was co-founder of Armenian-Turkish Youth Orchestra [9]which in July 2010 gave three concerts in Istanbul.

In the period of 1995-2023 has produced over 180 CDs and DVDs with recordings of the leading Armenian orchestras, chamber ensembles, instrumentalists and vocalists.

In 1998-1999 with the Eurasia Foundation financial support has established first Course of Arts Management in Armenia. Twice the Cadence Music Centre got grants of the Open Society Institute Armenia to go on with the Courses’ development (2002 and 2003).

Awards

Nika Babayan is Merited Worker of Culture of the Republic of Armenia (2011), was awarded with medals and diplomas of state and public organizations of Armenia. [10]

Author of two books: “Awards of Armenia: 1918-1939” (2011) [11] [12]and “Awards of the Armenian Church” (2016). [13]
