Nigel Ralph Murphy (born 1958) is a New Zealand historian who has published extensively on Chinese New Zealanders.

Work

Murphy was curator of Newspapers and Serials, New Zealand and Pacific Published Collections at the Alexander Turnbull Library in Wellington, and has studied Chinese New Zealand History since the late 1980s. In 2002, he was nominated to the New Zealand Office of Ethnic Affairs as a researcher and historian to support the reconciliation process following the government apology for the Chinese poll tax.[1] Murphy has authored research papers, journal articles, books, and book chapters on Chinese New Zealand history. In 2004, Murphy curated the exhibition: "A Barbarous Measure: the poll tax and Chinese New Zealanders" which was held at the National Library of New Zealand and later toured the country.[2] This exhibition formed part of the reconciliation outcome following the New Zealand Government's apology to poll tax payers and their descendants in 2002.[3]
