Nicolette Olivier is an American artist, filmmaker, and multi-genre writer. She is the owner and operator of Polyester Cowboy Productions, established in 2005, and is best known for her documentary, Oh Buster, Where Art Thou? (2022)[1], about the life and works of Silent Film pioneer, Buster Keaton.

Career

2005-2010:

Olivier formed her production company, Polyester Cowboy Productions[2] in 2005, named for her love of vintage western films and television shows, particularly, Bonanza, ultimately becoming an expert on the history and lore of the series. During this period, she begun her transition from physical art and photography to digital formats, and broke ground on her first documentary film, The Gordon Stories (2007)[3].

Olivier traveled through parts of Indiana, USA and Florida, USA, collecting family stories regarding the time in the early 1960s, when her grandmother was married to her second husband, an alcoholic known widely for getting into elaborate alcohol-fueled antics and mishaps. Though the stories had been mused upon and passed down through family at social gatherings for decades, they had never been documented prior to the film.

During production, Olivier was briefly-hospitalized after dislocating her knee in an accident, though was able to finish principal photography without delay. The film was released in 2007, and was submitted to several film festivals for consideration, but was not chosen for official selection. The film was available for view on imdb.com for several subsequent years, and is now available on YouTube.

During this period, Olivier also began developing screenplays, creating nine completed manuscripts, before suspending work to begin production on her second documentary film, MJ's Been Here (2009), following the sudden death of Michael Jackson. A life-long fan, within days of the passing of the entertainer, Olivier and family, took a trip to visit the Jackson homestead in Gary, Indiana, USA, where fans were meeting to pay respect to the fallen star. The film includes archival footage of Olivier dancing to music videos by Jackson as a child, and her memorabilia collection.

2010-2023:

By 2010, Olivier embarked on her third documentary film, Oh Buster, Where Art Thou? (2022)[4], examining the personal life and work of Buster Keaton. Olivier began interviewing Keaton's friends, family, fans, and historians, to create an emotional portrait of his life through those who knew and admire him.[5] She traveled around the country to Muskegon, Michigan, USA, and throughout California, USA to collect stories, and visit shooting locations for Keaton's films, and personal residences. A review from The Buster Keaton Society described the film as follows: Interspersed with clips from his movies, we are told Buster Keaton’s remarkable life story. There may be some nuggets of information that are new to you, some conjecture that might get you thinking, but the common thread between the family, friends and fans that speak about Buster’s life and work is love. He is admired, respected and from the twinkle in a few eyes, outright adored.[6]

The film premiered in a world-wide release on YouTube, September 22, 2022[7], and remains free to the public for viewing.

Prior to the release of the film, Olivier announced a companion book, Another New World, including additional content that she was unable to include in the film. The research and interviews conducted for both the film and book took more than 13 years to compile, and the book took over five years to write.[8] Olivier's cover art for the book was featured on the cover of Volume 20, #2, Summer 2022 edition of The Keaton Chronicle[9], where she was interviewed about the book while still under it's working title.

Another New World closely examines the private and professional life of Buster Keaton during the last two decades of his life, as well as that of his family, and some close friends. Written in the style of a non-fiction novel, Olivier holds a magnifying glass up to a period of Keaton's life when he found success in a third and final marriage, and resurrected his floundering career by getting in on the ground floor of the developing medium of television.[8]

Olivier recently announced due to the volume of content, the book would be published in two parts, the first slated for November 25, 2023, and the second part, yet released, will include a wide variety of restored and fully-colorized photos and documents chronicling Keaton's life from infancy and early days on stage, to the final years of his life.[10] Olivier has also indicated that she has many more Keaton-related projects that are up-coming, including a Keaton family cookbook, and a collection of her artwork.

Olivier has also announced an upcoming release of a book, The Big, Bad Wolf, a paranormal thriller/horror story, that is not related to her Keaton work, as well as more non-Keaton works to come.[11] During this period, Olivier has also completed numerous digital artworks, both stationary and animated. She sells a large majority of these works on RedBubble[12], and specializes in Magical Realism portraiture, nostalgia, and Psychedelia. In an interview with The Keaton Chronicle, Olivier revealed that her work is heavily inspired by the works of John Prine and Tom Waits.
