Nick Cherukuri is an American entrepreneur and inventor based in Princeton, New Jersey.[1] He is better known for his work in engineering and Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR). He is the founder and CEO of ThirdEye Gen, an augmented reality company. In 2019, he was selected into Forbes 30 Under 30 for Enterprise Technology.[2][3]

Early life and education

Cherukuri was born and raised in Princeton, NJ into a family of engineers. He attended The Lawrenceville School[4] and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania.[5] While a student he was a member of the Penn Men’s Rugby team and also was in the Golf and Rowing clubs. As a student he was an intern at a Defense contractor company as well as a student tutor. At University of Pennsylvania, he helped found the Penn AR/VR Club which was one of the first college clubs formed to study Augmented Reality.[6] In an interview with STARTUP INFO, he attributed his interest in AR/MR from the creation of this club, “While in school, I co-founded the Penn Virtual & Augmented Reality Club, which quickly grew to several hundred members.”

Career

In 2016, Cherukuri founded ThirdEye Gen, a sotfware company where he serves as its CEO.[7] The company officially left stealth mode in 2017 and came to market with its first augmented reality product the X1 AR Smart Glasses.The company grew over the next few years focusing on enterprise AR tech and it developed its next X2 MR Smart Glasses which was released in 2020.[8] The X2 included MR technology such as 6 DoF tracking, plane detection and an all-in-one ruggedized design.[9]

ThirdEye also developed custom subscription software for healthcare and field services that enabled remote telepresence and other features. Cherukuri was granted several patents in this field, later those patents were assined to ThirdEye. Currently, ThirdEye has presence in over a dozen countries and sells worldwide to military, healthcare and field services use cases.[10] ThirdEye has launched the ThirdEye Foundation which will donate AR tech to charity and underprivileged areas with the goal to increase education.

Public speaker

Cherukuri is a frequent commentator in the field of augmented reality including a main stage speakership at AWE 2018, where he talked about the current and future state of AR devices for enterprise and consumer space.[11] He has also spoken at CE Week NYC, CES and other leading shows.[12]
