Nicholas Ashe Bateman is an American filmmaker, visual artist, actor, and founder of the visual effects and animation company Maere Studios.

Career

The Wanting Mare (2020)

Bateman's debut feature, The Wanting Mare (2020), was an independently developed micro-budget project where he served as writer, director, editor, visual effects supervisor, producer, and actor.[1] He taught himself visual effects to execute the movie, which features over 500 VFX shots created primarily by him and a small team.[2] Wired called it “the most visual fantasy in recent memory,”[2] RogerEbert.com praised its dreamlike atmosphere,[3] and IndieWire described it as “one of the most ambitious sci‑fi debut films in years.”[4]

Other Work

In 2022, Bateman directed and animated the official music video for Father John Misty’s “Funny Girl.”[5] He also served as the creative design and visual effects supervisor on the Disney+ animated short An Almost Christmas Story (2024), co-produced by Disney Television Animation, Esperanto Filmoj, and Titmouse.

As the founder and visual effects supervisor of Maere Studios, Bateman has overseen visual effects work on more than 25 feature films. Notable credits include A24's The Green Knight, Disney's Hocus Pocus 2, Peter Pan & Wendy, Knock at the Cabin, and Ava DuVernay's Origin.[6]
