Aaliyah Hadassah Hannah Claxton[1] (born April 28, 2002) [2] known professionally as Nevada-Aaliyah Claxton, is an English podcaster, radio presenter, and writer. [3]

Early life and education

Aaliyah Hadassah Hannah Claxton was born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire.[1] Her mother, Afi Claxton is a care worker, [4] of Afro-Trinidadian and European heritage. Her father, Nicholas ’Tony’ Rosales is of Venezuelan, Indian, and European descent. Her parents separated in her early childhood. Claxton has four younger half-siblings.

Claxton moved frequently in her early life, growing up in neighboring Rotherham and Doncaster, before the family relocated to their native Trinidad and Tobago, when she was aged 5. She was raised primarily in Point Fortin, Trinidad, where she grew up with "things that aren't considered 'black,' like the swim team and field hockey, and sailing."

Claxton lived with her grandmother (née Blades) in Brooklyn and Queens, New York (state)|New York for a short period during her childhood. She credits these earlier moves for her sensitivity and considers herself to be a third-culture kid. [5][3] In 2020, Claxton spoke openly about the downside of her younger life, and a need to ground herself after years of unsteadiness: ...my entire life has kinda been we’ve moved and nothings been stable and everything is constantly getting uprooted, there was no way I'd survive four more years of going on like that... even in stillness my brain was going a million miles per hour.

When Claxton was in sixth grade, her family moved to Luton, Bedfordshire, where she attended Lealands High School.[6] After completing A levels at Luton Sixth Form College[7], she left Luton to study journalism at City, University of London, but dropped out three weeks later. Claxton cites the decision due to an inability to cope academically through the pandemic. [8]

Career

Radio

Claxton got her start in radio as co-presenter of Hear Me on BBC Three Counties alongside two other local teenagers Jerome and Saskia in 2020, before the show was discontinued due to lockdown restrictions as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In September 2021, she joined AUKRadio, becoming the host and solo presenter of Unboxing.[9] The hour-long show was broadcasted every Thursday, with an array of guests, and was dedicated towards self-reflection and conversation on world issues.

In March 2022, she began co-presenting with Ayzha every Tuesday under the same show format.

Other work

In late 2020, Claxton began hosting Kinda Sorta Unfiltered, a podcast available to streaming platforms across all multi-media.

By using Anchor as her forum, Claxton was able to have autonomy over her work. She writes, records, produces, and edits most of the podcast herself. [10]

In that same year, Claxton became an ambassador for The Sapphire Miriam Foundation, which operates across the Caribbean and aims to provide services such as educational programs and training projects to individuals from lower-income communities to ensure their personal growth and development. [11][12]

Personal life

Having originally planned to pursue a career in acting, Claxton attended Emil Dale Academy of Performing Arts in Hitchin, Hertfordshire.

In 2022, Claxton competed in the eighth annual Miss Caribbean UK pageant, progressing onto the Grand Finalé held at The Shaw Theatre, London on October 30th. She represented Trinbago.[13]

As a teenager, she was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and underwent cognitive behavioral therapy. Claxton is known to talk openly about her mental health difficulties, the benefits of engaging with therapy, and the importance of looking after one's mental health and well-being. [14] She talks often about her struggle with panic disorder and is an advocate for legislative amendments to health care laws surrounding Sickle Cell Anemia and Suicide Awareness.

Claxton is the maternal cousin of Welsh actress Jessica Sula.

Activism

Claxton is an advocate for civil rights and women's rights movements. Her work includes themes of equality and social justice.

She often uses her social platforms to address racial justice, voting, body shaming, and bullying.

In June 2020, Claxton was a key organizer in the facilitation of the Luton Black Lives Matter protest in the wake of the George Floyd Protests, which had a turnout of over 600. After the march, she and several other teens involved were invited to work with Luton Borough Council.[15]
