The Neutral officer was an illegal organization established in October 1945 by a group of staff officers led by Gen. Ivan Konstaninov Popov [1]. It aimed to overthrow the new government of the ulgarian Fatherland Front and restore the previous regime in the country. Although it had been in contact with leaders of some opposition parties, the organization had failed to expand its activity. It was uncovered by the security authorities in 1946, and 27 of its participants were sent to the court and received prison sentences of varying durations. The "Neutral Officer" trial was also utilized to deal with the opposition. Its leader, Nikola Petkov, was accused of organizing an attempted military coup, and this gave rise to a death sentence against him.
