Neurology is the medical specialty concerned with the study, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders of the nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord, and any nerves connecting the two. Neuroscience, the scientific study of the nervous system, is crucial to the practise of neurology.

A neurologist is a doctor with advanced training in neurology who focuses on the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of neurological conditions. Stroke, seizures, movement disorders like Parkinson's, autoimmune neurologic illnesses like MS, headache disorders like migraine, and dementias like Alzheimer's are just few of the many neurological ailments that neurologists treat. Clinical researchers, clinical trialists, and fundamental and translational neurologists all exist. Because neurology does not involve cutting people open, neurosurgery is the analogous surgical subspecialty.
