Founded on April 9, 1971, the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) serves as the student wing of the Indian National Congress (INC or Congress). Following the merger of the Kerala Students Union and the West Bengal State Chhatra Parishad to build a national students' organisation, Indira Gandhi established the National Students' Organization.

An individual who wishes to join the National Student Union of India (NSUI) should be under the age of 27 and must be a student. He or she should also be an Indian citizen who is not a member of any other political organisation and who has not been convicted of any criminal action in the past. Primary Members and Active Members are the two categories in which NSUI divides its members. The organization's examination procedure results in the Primary membership of an aspiring member who applies for NSUI Membership.
