Nathie Marbury (1944–2013) was an American educator and advocate in the Deaf community. She was among the first Black Deaf women to hold positions in national organizations and educational institutions related to Deaf education and advocacy.[1]
Early life and education
Marbury was born in Granada, Mississippi, and raised in Pennsylvania. She graduated from the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf in 1962. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from Gallaudet University in 1975 and two Master of Arts degrees in Administration, Supervision, and Special Education from California State University, Northridge in 1976.[2] She received a Doctorate in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education from Lamar University in 2007.[3]
Career
Marbury participated in the National Leadership Training Program for the Deaf at California State University, Northridge. She worked as an instructor at Kendall Demonstration Elementary School from 1978 to 1986. She served on the board of the National Association of the Deaf and was a member of the National Black Deaf Advocates. She also taught at the American School for the Deaf and later at Austin Community College, where she taught American Sign Language for 14 years.[4][5]
Death
Marbury died on April 15, 2013, in Austin, Texas.[6]
