Nate Garrett (full name Nathan Raleigh Garrett) [1] is an American singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He is currently active with metal band Spirit Adrift, and is a former member of Gatecreeper. [2]

Biography

Nate Garrett was born in Florida to two deaf parents. When he was four months old, his mother passed away. His first instrument was piano, which he began learning at age 3. Nate grew up in Oklahoma, and at age 12 he witnessed a music video for Black Sabbath's song "Paranoid (Black Sabbath song)|Paranoid," at which point he became serious about playing music. He moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas in 2006, where he played in his first touring bands.[3] In 2011, Nate left Arkansas and moved to Phoenix, Arizona. [4]After years of struggling with alcohol abuse, Nate got sober in 2015, shortly after his 27th birthday. He then wrote and recorded the first songs for what became his solo project, Spirit Adrift. Later that year, he joined Gatecreeper on rhythm guitar.[5] The first Spirit Adrift recordings, written and recorded entirely by Garrett, were released in 2016. [6] Shortly after, a live band was assembled for touring. [7] Eventually, both Spirit Adrift and Gatecreeper grew into successful internationally touring acts, and were ranked by Kerrang!|Kerrang as two of the best American metal bands of the 2010's.[8] In February 2020, Garrett left Gatecreeper to focus solely on Spirit Adrift. [9] Later that year, Spirit Adrift signed with Century Media Records|Century Media and released their most recent album Enlightened in Eternity, which peaked at #79 on the Billboard charts.[10] [11] Nate relocated to Texas in March 2020, and in October of the same year was featured on the cover of both The Austin Chronicle and Decibel (magazine)|Decibel Magazine. [12] [13] Garrett has been described as a “younger oracle to carry on the torch of heavy metal,” by Pitchfork (website). [14] He is a frequent guest on the Two Minutes To Late Night YouTube cover series. [15]

Equipment

According to his Rig Rundown on Premier Guitar, Nate uses Dunable Guitars (specifically the R2D2 model), Brother Coyote Guitars, EVH amps, Orange Amps|Orange amps, and Earthquaker Devices pedals.[16]
