Nate Byrne is an Australian meteorologist, oceanographer and television presenter, best known for delivering the weather forecasts on ABC News Breakfast.[1]

From 2004 to 2017, Byrne served as a lieutenant (navy) with the Royal Australian Navy.[1]

After earning a post-graduate certificate in meteorology from the Bureau of Meteorology while serving with the navy in 2013, he graduated from the Australian National University in 2016 with a Master of Science Communication (Outreach) in 2016.[2][3] For three months, Byrne was a member of the Questacon Science Circus travelling to remote parts of Australia to deliver science shows.[1]

He joined the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in February 2017, commencing on ABC News Breakfast on 13 March 2017 replacing Vanessa O'Hanlon.[1] Byrne criticised viewers for judging television weather presenters on their gender, age, looks and clothes rather than an ability to effectively communicate information.[4]

In February 2022, Byrne reveals he suffers from anxiety and has suffered a number of panic attacks while live on air presenting the weather.[5][6]

Testing positive to COVID-19 in March 2022, Byrne continued to deliver weather forecasts from home isolation.[7]

Byrne is openly gay.[8] He has been the recipient of a number of homophobic comments on social media, which have been condemned by his colleagues.[9][10]

Along with Art Simone, in March 2022, Byrne hosted the Carvivale event at the ChillOut Festival in Daylesford, Victoria which is Australia's largest regional pride festival.[11][12]

During an interview with the cast of queer cabaret show YUMMY in June 2022, Byrne debuted his drag queen alter ego called Gail Warnings.[13][14]

In June 2022, Byrne was part of a team of four who broke a Guinness World Record for the fastest ten kilometres ridden on a quadricycle which occurred on World Bike Day.[15]
