Nancy Jane Hermiston is a professor in the Music department at University of British Columbia. She is also the Chair of the Voice and Opera Divisions and Director of the UBC Opera Ensemble at the same university.
Hermiston has had an accomplished career in opera, performing in Canada, the United States, and Europe. She made her New York debut at Carnegie Hall alongside Marilyn Horne and Mario Bernardi. After her European debut, she became a permanent member of the prestigious Nürnberg Opera. Throughout her career, she has worked as a voice teacher and stage director at institutions such as the Meistersinger Konservatorium in Nürnberg and the University of Toronto Opera and Performance Divisions.
In 1995, Hermiston joined the faculty at UBC as the Coordinator of the Voice and Opera Division. She has received several accolades for her contributions to the arts, including the Dorothy Somerset Award for Performance and Development in the Visual and Performing Arts in 2008 and a Killam Teaching Prize in the 2009/2010 academic year.
In recognition of her achievements as an opera singer, stage director, and educator, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2014.
