Nancy C. Mejía is an American writer and television director. She is a first-generation Salvadoran American and a native of Los Angeles. Mejía is recognised for her work as a staff writer and director on the STARZ series Vida, as well as a writer on The L Word: Generation Q. She is an AFI Directing Workshop for Women Fellow and a recipient of the inaugural Outfest Fusion Spotlight Award.

Early life and education

Mejía was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Salvadoran immigrants. She developed an early interest in storytelling and performance through her high school theatre program. After being denied admission to local film schools, she pursued studies in theatre and women’s studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

As a first-generation Salvadoran American, Mejía is actively involved in vocalising the challenges of navigating the entertainment industry without institutional access and mentorship. Using her personal experience as a queer, Latinx woman in the entertainment industry to highlight how this shaped her determination to create more inclusive narratives. She describes how those experiences shaped her creative drive. In interviews, she has stated, “When someone tells me I can’t do something, it pushes me to prove them wrong… I simply respond, ‘Let me show you.’”

Career

Mejía began her career writing short films and feature-length scripts. She later became involved with the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP), which helped connect her with industry professionals. In 2018, she joined the writing staff of the STARZ series Vida as a staff writer after being discovered by showrunner Tanya Saracho. During her time on the series, Mejía shadowed director Rose Troche and was later selected to direct an episode in the show’s second season, marking her television directing debut. After Vida, Mejía went on to write for The L Word: Generation Q. She later expanded her directing career by directing episodes of the Showtime series The Chi, after being recommended by producing director Gandja Monteiro. Mejía has also worked as an episodic and producing director across television projects and has been involved in the development of feature adaptations.

Mejía’s work often centres on themes of identity, immigration, sexuality, and cultural visibility. Her storytelling frequently explores the lived experiences of Latinx and LGBTQ+ communities.
