Naji Habra born at June 7th 1957 in Damascus (Syria), is a Belgian academic. He holds a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering and a Ph.D. in Computer Science. In September 2017, he became the first rector, elected by weighted universal suffrage, of the University of Namur (UNamur) in Belgium. He held this mandate for 4 years until September 2021.
Studies
After studying civil engineering at the University of Damascus, he taught the resistance of materials. Naji Habra moved to Belgium and continued his studies at UCLouvain in Computer Science a then emerging discipline. He obtained a Specialization Certificate in Computer Science at Louvain-la-Neuve and then a Special Degree in Applied Sciences to become a Civil Engineer in Computer Science at 1984. Naji Habra defended his Doctorate in Computer Science in 1990 at the University of Namur
He is an Emeritus Full Professor, Emeritus Rector, at the University of Namur where he taught courses in Software Engineering, Software Quality and Information Systems Strategy before leading the university as a Rector.
As co-holder of the E-government Chair (Electronic Administration ), he launched and chaired the research center PReCISE specializing in Information Systems Engineering. His research areas are: software quality, software measurements and agile processes. He has led several research projects with Walloon and European funding.
From 2005 until September 2011, he was president of the non-profit organization "Facultés Universitaires N.D. de la Paix" (which became the « University of Namur »); he was then dean of the Faculty of Computer Science from 2011 to 2015, then vice-rector from 2015 to 2017.
At 2017 Naji Habra became the Rector of the University, he took this responsabilité from September 2017 to September 2021. His mandate was marked by the expansion of the university's offered cursus through new accreditations granted by public authorities, by the implementation of a new, modernized and more participatory governance and - from March 2020 - by the management of the crisis induced by the Covid-19 pandemic.
He is particularly interested in the question of interculturality, in the history of minorities in the Arab world and in the question of migration
In the Belgian elections of June 9, 2024, he is a candidate for the House of Representatives .
