Nabhan Al-Hanshi is an Omani writer and activist who lives in exile since 2012. Nabhan left Oman in 2012 as the first Omani who involved in the famous called Insulting the Monarch, after he was imprisoned in 2012 with other 35 activists. He established The Omani Center for Human Rights while he was living in Lebanon in February, 2013. Then in 2014, he moved to the UK where he is living now as a political refugee.
Early life and career
Nabhan was born in 1980 in Jalan B.B Hassan, Oman. In 2002, he graduated as an IT teacher and worked for the Ministry of Education in Oman since 2003 until he left the country. Nabhan received his degree in Legal Practice Course (LLB), from the University of South Wales, in 2021.
Writing
Nabhan started publishing in the local newspapers since 1995. In 2006 he published his first book, short stories, and until now he published five books, 2 short stories and 3 novels, as he is preparing to announce the release of his sixth book. Nabhan is also preparing the release of his first book translated from Arabic to English, which will be published by Olympia Ltd.<ref
Political and human rights activism
In 2009, Nabhan released his blog where he used to publish his views about politics and human rights, as he could not publish these views in the local newspapers. In February, he engaged in organising a peaceful protest in Muscat which was called The Second Green March. Later he joined other different protests in Sohar, Sur and Muscat.
Arrest and Harassment
In May 2011, the authorities arrested Nabhan while he was protesting with other people in Muscat and demanding the release of other protesters who were arrested few days before. He was released few days later without being charged. In June 2012, he was kidnapped by the Omani intelligence from a café, and kept in a secret place for more than 30 days. After 3 months, he was accused by the first court of insulting the Sultan Qaboos bin Said and undermining the public security. In 9 September 2012, he was released after he paid an amount of $3,800 as a bail.
Political asylum
In December 2012, Nabhan fled Oman to Lebanon where he applied for a protection from the UN Refugee Commission in Beirut. In January 2014, Nabhan arrived to London and apply for a political asylum. In August 2016, he was granted as a refugee by the court, after the Home Office rejected his application.
The Omani Centre for Human Rights
In March 2017, Nabhan registered the organisation in the UK. The Centre is the first Omani independent organisation based outside Oman. Moreover, the Centre is the first organisation to publish an annual report of the violations in Oman since 2013. Nabhan in 2017 developed the Centre work to spread awareness contents besides documenting and reporting human rights violations.
