N. SugalChand Jain (born 23 July, 1944) is an Indian businessman and philanthropist, who is the founder trustee of many charitable institutions like the Singhvi Charitable Trust,[1] Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation[2], Jains India Trust,[3] Vidhya Jyoti Trust[4] and Empathy Foundation.[5]
Sugalchand Jain, a native from Siyat village Sojat Road in the Pali district of Rajasthan, came to Chennai with his father, Nathmal Jain and has been living in Chennai for the past 77 years.
Early life and education
In 1962, Shri Sugalchand Jain, after dropping out of P.U.C, forayed into business world. At the age of 53, he graduated in Psychology in October 1997 from University of Madras. He obtained Post Graduate Diploma in NGO Management in 2008 from Madurai Kamaraj University and M.Sc. in Psychology in 2013 from University of Madras.
Business
Jain a multifaceted personality. He tried his hand in trading, small industry, pawn brokering, gold and diamond jewelry, pen selling, mehndi ( Henna powder ) selling and lottery. He also supplied cattle feed to the Madras Corporation. In 1968, he made his entry into the world of lotteries and helped mobilize resources for various state governments for social welfare activities.
Philanthropy
He decided that time had come for him to give back to society and he began to very actively assist the weak and the voiceless and participate in philanthropy from 1974. He established Charitable Trusts like Singhvi Charitable Trust, Vidhya Jyothi Trust, Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation to assist, uplift and encourage the needy. He began to take active part in charitable institutions like Cancer Institute, Sankara Nethralaya[6] etc and contributed generously to many NGOs doing selfless service for the welfare of the voiceless animals and needy people.
Entrepreneurial skills
Shri Sugalchand Jain is sharing his entrepreneurial experience and skills by being on the boards of the following NGOs:
- AvvaiHome,[7] chairman
- Cancer Institute,[8] governing board member
- Sankara Nethralaya, board member
- S.S.Jain Educational Society, member
- Sri Jain Medical Relief Society, member
Earlier he was associated with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Voluntary Health Services, Child Trust Hospital in Chennai.
