A musical ensemble, often known as a music group or a musical group, is a collection of individuals who get together to play instrumental or vocal music, with the ensemble being recognised by a specific name in the music industry. Some music groups, such as the jazz quartet or the symphony, are comprised entirely of musical instruments. Other types of music ensembles, such as choirs and doo wop groups, are exclusively comprised of vocalists. The rock band or the Baroque chamber group for basso continuo (harmonium and cello) and one or more singers are examples of ensembles that play in both popular and classical music, and they are examples of ensembles that include both instrumentalists and vocalists. The sounds of musical instrument families (such as piano, strings, and wind instruments) are blended or grouped together in trios or quartets in classical music. String ensembles (such as string quartets) or wind ensembles (such as wind quintets) are examples of instrument families that are blended in trios or quartets (e.g., wind quintet). In certain orchestras, the sounds of several instrument families are blended together, such as in the orchestra, which includes a string section as well as brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments, or in the concert band (which includes brass, woodwinds, and percussion instruments).

Instruments commonly found in jazz groups or combos include wind instruments (one or more saxophones, trumpets, etc.), one or two chordal "comping" instruments (electric guitar, piano, or Hammond organ), a bass instrument (bass guitar or double bass), as well as a drummer or percussionist (in some cases). Jazz ensembles may be entirely instrumental, or they can be made up of a number of instruments that accompany one or more vocalists on the piano or vocals. Musicians who perform in rock and pop ensembles, commonly referred to as rock bands or pop bands, are typically accompanied by guitars and keyboards (piano, electric piano (hammond organ), synthesiser, etc.), one or more singers, a rhythm section consisting of a bass guitar and drum kit, among other instruments.
