Muraly Srinarayanathas (Tamil:: முரளி ஸ்ரீநாராயணதாஸ்; born 5 July 1979) is a third culture Canadian business leader, investor, and philanthropist. He is the Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of 369 Global, a conglomerate of enterprises that centers the power, potential, and prosperity of newcomers and immigrants to Canada. Key portfolio companies include Computek College, a regulated Ontario career college; 369 Konnect, an integrated marketing agency; station 369, an independent entertainment production company; and the Srinarayanathas Foundation, a registered Canadian charity.

Business

In 1999, after graduating from the University of Manitoba, Muraly moved to Bangladesh to support his father, Navaratnam Srinarayanathas, while he recovered from a heart attack. Muraly ran the family business, Global Neway, a direct sales company, as well as other business ventures for more than a decade, including Guardian Tours and Cargo, a tour and travel company and Midas Entertainment, a joint venture film production company based in both Bangladesh and Canada, amongst others. During his time in Bangladesh, he was also a co-owner of the Sylhet Strikers, a franchise cricket team that plays in the Bangladesh Premier League. Following his time in Bangladesh, Muraly relocated to the United Kingdom where he was a senior executive at Priyo Communications, a mobile virtual network operator based in London.

In 2012, Muraly returned to Toronto, Canada soon after which he acquired Computek College, a regulated Ontario career college established in 1991 that focuses on reskilling and upskilling newcomers for careers in business, health care, and technology. Under Muraly’s visionary leadership and 369 Global’s management, Computek has rapidly grown and now serves nearly 2,000 students in three campuses located in Toronto, Markham, and Ajax. In 2022, Computek partnered with the Town of Ajax to implement “Compassion Tech”, an accelerated program to train, license, and secure employment for 150 personal support workers (PSWs) in and around Durham Region, with funding support from the Ontario government’s Skills Development Fund.[1]

Muraly is also the Co-Owner and Chief Growth Officer of 369Konnect, an integrated marketing agency that helps businesses and organizations to communicate, attract, and engage with newcomer and diverse consumer audiences in Canada and around the world. In 2022, the agency led a private trade mission to the United Arab Emirates for Canadian small and medium enterprise owners to explore opportunities in that market where selected delegates engaged in a high level bilateral dialogue with His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan of the ruling Al Nahyan family of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Part of Muraly’s family business interests had been in making movies in India where they produced several Tamil-language films for the Kollywood industry under the Sri Kala International banner. One of those films, Veedu, by legendary avant garde filmmaker Balu Mahendra won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil in 1988. Drawing on this experience, Muraly founded station 369 to produce and act in several productions, including shorts, features, documentaries, and more. Recently, he was an executive producer and cast member of the film This Place, which premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. He is a registered member of the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists.

Muraly was a finalist for the Inspirational Leader of the Year Award at the CanadianSME Small Business Awards 2022.[2]

Philanthropy

Muraly co-founded his first social purpose enterprise, Panther Social, in 2010 under the guidance of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. The Rickshaw Program assisted rickshaw drivers in building self-sustainable livelihoods by offering healthcare, education services, and training in financial management.

Muraly continues his philanthropic interests today as Chair of the Srinarayanathas Foundation, a charitable organization.The Foundation has identified its key priorities as civic engagement, healthcare, education, and the creative arts.

Muraly also sits on the board of comdu.it, a global network of diaspora volunteers that focuses on mobilizing diaspora knowledge capital, responsible investments, and community networks for the sustainable development of war-impacted and vulnerable communities in Northern, Eastern, and Central Sri Lanka – important work that has been supported by Global Affairs Canada, Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, and notable philanthropic foundations such as the Open Society Foundations and the Schöck Family Foundation.

Muraly is a big believer in health and wellness. He regularly participates in the Annual SAAAC Walk-A-Thon for autism awareness and the TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon where he raises funds for the Srinarayanathas Foundation to support several hospitals in and around the Greater Toronto Area.

In 2017, the Canadian Board Diversity Council named Muraly as one of its Diversity50 cohort individuals with the greatest potential to impact Canada’s corporate boards and improve global competitiveness.[3]

Education

Muraly completed his secondary schooling at St. Paul's High School in Winnipeg before being admitted to the University of Manitoba, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts. He also earned a Master’s in Business Administration from Southeast University in Bangladesh, and a Global Professional Masters of Law from the University of Toronto. A believer in lifelong learning, Muraly has also completed the ICD-Rotman Directors Education Program, taking his first step towards acquiring the ICD.D designation, and has studied digital strategy at Harvard Business School and financial services underwriting at Seneca College.

Personal Life

Muraly is a third culture kid, and grew up in several countries. He was born in London, United Kingdom in 1979 and spent his early years in Jaffna, Sri Lanka and Chennai, India before moving to Winnipeg, Canada in 1987.

Muraly is married to Dr. Darya Yermak, a General Internist, who practises in Markham, Canada where they live with their two children.
