Mujaga Zlatarević (active 1831–1832) was a Bosniak military commander and one of the key figures in the Bosnian uprising of 1831–1832 against the Ottoman Empire. He served under Husein-kapetan Gradaščević, also known as the "Dragon of Bosnia", who led the movement for Bosnian autonomy.
Background
Mujaga Zlatarević was born in Žepče, a town in central Bosnia. Little is known about his early life, but by 1831 he had become an influential commander in the Bosnian provincial army assembled by Gradaščević.
Role in the Bosnian Uprising
Zlatarević played a prominent military role in several key engagements of the Bosnian Uprising.
Battle of Kosovo (1831)
In July 1831, Zlatarević led a vanguard of approximately 300 men into the area of Lipljan in Kosovo to scout Ottoman troop positions. His reconnaissance enabled the Bosnian army to prepare for and ultimately win the Battle of Kosovo Field on 18 July 1831, defeating the Ottoman governor Reşid Mehmed Pasha.
Campaign in Herzegovina (1832)
Zlatarević led forces from central Bosnia into Herzegovina, where he successfully pushed back pro-Ottoman forces. He defeated Bašaga Redžepović near Nevesinje, and forced Ali-paša Rizvanbegović to retreat to Stolac.
Siege of Stolac (Spring 1832)
Zlatarević commanded reinforcements from Sarajevo during the siege of Stolac. However, the campaign was halted on 16 March 1832 following orders from Gradaščević to regroup and prepare for the Ottoman counteroffensive.
